Power your future with Qualus in our Protection and Control Field Services department as a Senior Relay Technician/ Field Engineer. Our Senior Relay Technicians/ Senior Field Relay Engineers perform commissioning, testing and routine maintenance of Generation, Transmission and Distribution substation power equipment, protective relaying (electro-mechanical, solid state and micro-processor), relay communication equipment, controls and communications equipment. Responsibilities

  • Testing and commissioning including (without limitation):  reading/verifying voltage and current inputs to relays; verifying metering (local and SCADA); calibrating relays; trip testing (local and SCADA); verifying all alarms (local and SCADA); verifying all functional devices, switches, etc.
  • Performing routine troubleshooting and repair of substation relaying and control equipment. Commission new substations, power equipment, relaying (electro-mechanical, solid state and microprocessor), relay communication equipment, controls and communications equipment
  • Planning, scheduling, and completing test activities efficiently, on time, without service interruptions.
  • Providing Project Technical Support to Field Service personnel
  • Acceptance testing of new circuit breakers, transformers, CTs, PTs, CVTs
  • Preform testing and commissioning activities in greenfield & brownfield substations, power plants, industrial facilities, hospitals, and wind/solar farms.
  • Develop isolation, commissioning, safety, and energization plans for customers.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of field experience in commissioning, panel and equipment checkout, relay calibration, testing and repairing substation relaying and control schemes
  • Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or similar degrees are a plus but not required with proven experience.
  • Experience is desirable in any of the following related areas: substation design (including protection & control engineering); substation construction; substation commissioning; SCADA/Fault Data/SER/Integration-Automation equipment installation and testing
  • 3 phase power systems; power system protection & control schemes; test equipment
  • Basic understanding of protection schemes such as, transformer differential, high/low impedance bus differential, transmission line (step distance, differential, pilot schemes), feeder, and generator protection.
  • Ability to troubleshoot AC and DC control circuits, mark-up AC and DC schematics, communicate issues to engineering, and implement design changes.
  • Test equipment and toll/wiring usage; interpretation of wiring and elementary diagrams; basic test skills to perform duties listed above; basic PC skills
  • Understanding of relay test set software and ability to create relay test plans.
  • Interpret logic diagrams; ability to read, write, and modify logic to properly functional test relaying and equipment.
  • Quickly learn and apply test procedure for various types of substation equipment; communicate effectively with diverse groups, tailoring communication for audience and situation
  • Learn and apply client’s switching procedures and safety measures as required
  • Reference and complete assignments as described in applicable specifications, NETA, IEEE, NERC, and NEC.
  • Perform regular field work both indoors and outdoors.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, communication skills, business acumen, management ability
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Valid Driver’s license and safe driving record
