Qualus University’s Relay Technician Boot Camp program aims to prepare entry level technicians/field engineers for their careers within Qualus. Our program pours intensive training into new graduates over the course of seven weeks that leads to on-the-job mentoring. These efforts propel their careers off to a great start, producing quality entry level relay technicians/field engineers who can provide great impact and produce excellence within Qualus and its customers. 

 

The 2025 Relay Technician Boot Camp, powered by Qualus University, will have a start date of Monday July 7, 2025. All offers extended will be permanent positions with Qualus and will be assigned a customer project within the region noted upon successful completion of the 7-week Boot Camp program. Please note that this position does require extensive travel throughout the region assigned. 

Responsibilities

  • Supporting acceptance testing / routine maintenance of Transmission and Distribution substation power equipment, relaying (electro-mechanical, solid state and microprocessor), pilot channel equipment (power line carrier, (testing of carrier set, tuning unit, wave trap), pilot wire, transfer trip, fiber optic, CT’s, CCVT's, line tuners, line traps, etc.), controls and communications equipment testing, verifying all metering (local and SCADA); calibrating all relays; trip testing (local and SCADA), digital fault recorders (DFRs) and sequence of event recorders (SERs) and end-to-end line relay systems

  • Applying test procedures for various types of relay test equipment

  • Substation awareness and Safety consciousness

  • Aptitude to quickly learn and apply test procedures for various types of substation equipment

  • Good PC skills and the ability to support testing activities as required by the project lead 

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of 3 phase power systems; power system protection & control schemes; test equipment; test equipment software

  • Field experience in commissioning, panel and equipment checkout, relay calibration, testing and repairing substation relaying and control schemes preferred.

  • Knowledge of test equipment and tool/wiring usage

  • Interpretation of wiring and elementary diagrams; basic test skills to perform duties listed above, basic PC skills

  • Learn and apply client’s switching procedures and safety measures under direct supervision

  • Reference and complete assignments as described in applicable specifications

  • Perform regular field work both indoors and outdoors

  • Quickly learn and apply test procedure for various types of substation equipment

  • Candidates must be able to perform physical activity such as pushing, pulling, lifting and bending in all types of weather extremes

  • Candidates must be able to lift at least 30 lbs. without assistance

  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record

  • Associate of Science in Electrical Technology (AET) or equivalent specialized training in system protection for a Relay Technician title.

  • Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Technology (BET) or bachelor's in science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) required for a Relay Field Engineer title.
